Need to introduce emerging technology at school level: VC


LAHORE: (Wednesday, April 30, 2025): Punjab University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Ali has said that Pakistan needs to introduce modern science and emerging technology subjects at school level to address food security, cyber security, agriculture and environmental issues. He expressed these views while addressing “Scientists Convention” on the theme ‘Science for Socio-Economic Development’ at Al Raazi Hall in connection with the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) in the field of science and technology. The event was jointly organized by Punjab University Institute of Botany, Pakistan Science Foundation and Pakistan Academy of Sciences here on Wednesday. Former Federal Minister for Food Security and President Pakistan Academy of Sciences Dr Kauser Abdullah Malik, Director Research, PSF Dr Mirza Habib Ali, Professor Emeritus GCU Lahore Dr Ikram-ul-Haq, PU Dean Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Prof Dr Saleem Haider, Pakistan Scientific and Technological Information Center’s Additional Director Mr Ali Raza Khan, scientists, researchers, faculty members and students were present. In his address, Prof Dr Muhammad Ali said that problems are arising due to migration from villages to cities in Pakistan and agricultural land is decreasing. He said that a large part of our food is being wasted on a daily basis. He said that the water level in Lahore is continuously decreasing, which is increasing the risk of drought. He said that the government should make use of scientists from PSF and PAS to formulate an integrated strategy regarding water, food, agriculture and climate. He appreciated the efforts of the organizers for conducting such an event. He said that the promotion of science and technology is very important for the development of the country. He said that we need to prepare our students for critical thinking. He said that it is necessary to save the PU so that Pakistan and young students can be saved. Therefore, the university has taken a number of initiatives for the welfare of students and ensure provision of rights to them, he added. Dr Kauser Abdullah Malik said that as we strive to achieve the SDGs by 2030, it's crucial to prioritize inclusive policies, sustainable practices, and collaborative efforts to address socioeconomic disparities, promote human well-being, and protect the planet. “By integrating the 17 SDGs into our development strategies, we can create a more equitable, prosperous, and sustainable future for all”, he said. Dr Malik emphasized that PSF should be strengthened by the federal government by providing sufficient financial resources and proper leadership. He appreciated the role of PSF for social economic development through scientific research sponsored by Pakistan Science Foundation. Prof Dr Ikram-ul-Haq described the research activities at Pakistani universities including PU, GCU Lahore, GCU Faisalabad, FCC, University, UVAS and others. He said that educationists, scientists, researchers and scholars have to work together for the development and prosperity of Pakistan. Dr Mirza Habib Ali, while shedding detailed light on the Pakistan Science Foundation, said that the PSF is an apex institution for the promotion of basic research on scientific issues related to the socio-economic development of the country. He said that the role of science and technology is very important in solving economic, social and environmental problems. He said that we should use new and integrated methods that can fully strengthen existing and new scientific knowledge. Ali Raza Khan said that PSF was created in 1973 with the vision of promoting scientific knowledge and supporting research activities. He said that the PSF has been at the forefront of promoting science education and research, recognizing that a robust scientific foundation is essential for socio-economic development. He said that as of recent reports, PSF has approved research projects under its Competitive Research Program (CRP), these projects encompass a diverse range of applied research, including the development of prototypes such as indigenous ventilator machines and diagnostic catheters. He said that by funding many impactful research projects at premier institutions, PSF has played a crucial role in fostering technological advancements, enhancing productivity. He said that it resulted into improved public health and economic growth.
